This past year I decided to revisit the RC hobby after a 20 year layoff. When I was younger,my younger brother got a Blackfoot for christmas, the first thing We did that christmas day was take it outside and try it out. I got to drive it and was hooked. The only problem was no one told me it wasn't waterproof until after I ran it through the creek. Man was that funny when it took off out of control at full speed. I then got my first RC the Lunchbox. After that I got several rc's and the last was a RC-10. Well this past winter My younger brother got me hooked again. After deciding it was time to quit DIRT Track racing I needed a new hobby to fill the time. He called me one day and said he was going to the hobby shop to check out some stuff and came home with an E-Savage. So I had to take a trip for myself. I came home with a Mini-late model and ordered a buggy, and bought several new magazines. I started seeing all kinds of stuff about rock crawlers. These cool rigs really got my attention, plus I have a rock pile on my property. I started researching and couldn't decide what to get,and then I found the Cliff Climber RTR for $110. Man how can you go wrong with that. So, I ordered one and ran it around the house and was having a blast with it. Then I discovered rccrawler.com,and they had a section for the Cliff Climber. Man all the stuff guys were doing to their rigs was wild and I wanted to totally mod out my CC. I bought pretty much everything I could find. Heres a list of everything I bought:
Holmes 454 cobalts
RC4WD dual motor Mayhem ESC
RC4WD Crawler 3 channel radio
Vennom metal gear servos
DTX metal Gears and ball bearings
All of the DTX Alloy links, knuckles, wheel hexes, shock mounts, bushings etc
DTX Battery mount
After I got all of that I sat down one day and totally rebuilt this rig and man was I proud of it. It LOOKED AWESOME. I made one virgin run and snapped 3 of the new alloy links. I soon came to the conclusion after spending $500 on all all this stuff I liked it better when it was stock. The thing was wicked fast but the drag brake was so strong it wound flip over when you let off the throttle. The DTX links broke very easily and I was replacing them with the stock ones. I stripped it down threw everything in a box, ordered my 3 year old a prebuilt CC for his birthday and we used some of the stuff and put together a nice rig for him.
I would see all of that stuff sitting around and think man was that a waste of money. Then I got the new issue of rock crawling and seen a CC build with a Havoc Chassis and thought man I got alot of that stuff already, and was going to order a Hellstrom chassis so I might as well order a Havoc too. I had a VW body that I screwed up when I reamed out the mounting holes, I had some Axial wheels and a new set of Chisels. I ordered some axial links and hardware. I got everthing together and built quite a nice rig. It climbs real well, has great wheel speed, and looks pretty cool. I need to find some diferent shocks, the stock ones are really soft and limit articulation a good deal. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, and let me know what you think of the rig.
