Well time to put the Axial out to pasture until it gets a second life as a scaler. Picked this baby up today after much thought, almost cant go wrong with this rig outta the box. Was gonna go MOA but I just cant get enough shafty....<insert lame jokes here>. Special thanks to John at ABCharles for the sweet deal. Not to much magic is planned at first for the rig, just want to get it moving for now until the sweet mods roll into the door. No dollar will be spared on this truck, time to start getting serious if I am going to be attending all these "large" comps. Gotta rep for the club! GO GO Losi goodnesss.....well least the truck will be able to win, not sure about the driver just yet!

Well had to bust her outta the box today to get to know one another better and.......you guessed it......leaky shocks! Pretty disappointing to buy something brand new and have these small issues at the start. But none the less this is an "easy" fix and considering the problems this rig had at release, I'll take this minor issue. It came with fully updated spools and cvd's which was a nice surprise, some have been unlucky and still getting older versions. She is gonna sleep on the pillow next to me tonight.

Alright time to bring this thread up to date. As mentioned before, I was going to buy all the knick knacks this rig could handle. So first up we have the backbone of this sweet machine. Stock TVP plates were used along with a fancy delrin skid (sikax10) off RCC. Stock skid will do the trick, but the extra slippery goodness can never hurt. Next the goal was to shed weight up high, So i went with carbon fiber shock mounts. Along with these I used titanium bolts throughtout the chassis. As seen in the pic below.

4341

Another pic showing of the delrin skid. Kinda pricey for what you get but I didnt care to much. I did have to do some modding to get it to fit correctly, what else is new with my builds.

4342

Here are a few pics of the chassis w/ links. I'm using the stock uppers and the "ultra" pimp lundsford lowers. They have a slight break so they will help with breaking over and will slide over rocks better than aluminum.

43454346

Now lets get to those axles! First up is the front axle. This baby comes loaded with all the goodies. First off v3 cvd's, Losi aluminum carriers and spindles, Tini pins and last but not least, lundsford steering kit! I shaved down the servo stand offs to drop the servo some, only like 1/8" but will help with cg. Pretty self explanatory.

4347

Next up is the back axle. Nothing to fancy here other than Losi aluminum rear carriers. I went through each axle to check for correct gears/shims and put some fresh grease in until the nex tear down. I ran them both on a power drill for roughly 10mins each direction to aid break-in, but they were buttery smooth from the factory.

4348

Well thats enough for now, work in the morning and im bushed.

Are you going to drill access holes in the axles to allow for easy greasing between teardowns?

Nah, no ghetto looking screws needed. Since the gears are cut and shimmed right they run pretty efficient over past gear sets. If you really want to grease them fast all you have to do is pull of the servo mount and shoot grease into the hole, leads right to them. From research you only really have to grease them maybe once a month. I will just tear them apart to keep up on gear inspection and put fresh grease in. Just squirting new grease into old grease isnt the brightest idea.

thats funny...every time i have ever greased or had any of my cars/jeeps greased i/they have never got the old greese out before putting in the new grease?? guess we been doin it wrong for years :confused0082:

You may want to double-check that hole that you think there is...report back what you find.

I've had the ghetto screws in mine since before we ran at Crawlspace and nobody has ever said anything...bet nobody even noticed them.

Ya a guy off RCC gave out that tip on the hole above the worms. Never really looked at it just took his word for it. These things dont need to be greased as often as you may think. The Losi team drivers do it roughly once a month, and they crawl a ton more than we do. So I will just tear them down once a month to grease and inspect. Thats why im for-going the hole method, cant tell if your gears are on the way out by just piling in grease.

Edit: Just checked, there is indeed a hole above the worms to grease them. If you pull off the axle plate the hole that is above the pinion. You can just shoot grease down there if you feel inclined to do so. Only thing is it does look tight but if you run the truck slowly and pump it in it should take the grease.

That's fine if you want to do it that way. I'm not sure any of those holes are in the ideal place for directing grease where you want it, but it's your truck.

Wow...in the time it took me to type that last sentence, I'm ready to shoot grease in.

When you finish reading this post, I've got one axle greased up...got that servo off yet?:pok:

Everyone is entitled to do what they want with their truck. I'm not gonna do the port thing for now. If down the road it looks like I need to grease them more I will put in a port, but for now just gonna do it this way. They are still having trouble with some worms getting ate up, so I am airing on the cautious side and will inspect them for awhile to see how things are doing.

you right, we are all just giving you a hard time cause its fun to :pok: at ya, i know i would be too lazy to pull the axles apart once a month and inspect and re grease, crap ive had my super for over 5 years and never pulled the axle cases apart  well atleast not until i gernaded her last year at ecc :| but she was due to for some tlc.

more power to ya if you keep up on the maintenance, wish i could.. :help:

Ok time to pick this build back up. First off is the o' so leaky losi shocks. They leaked from the factory but I decided to give them a do over and hope I could fix this issue. So I tore them all down and rebuilt them. Losi golds at all four corners with "real" c - cups. I'm running 50wt in the front with roughly 13mm limiters, and 40wt in the rear with roughly 10mm limiters. All pistons stock. After the rebuild and tightening them up properly.......no leaks......wooooot!

4482

Next up time to get those axles hooked up the the backbone of this beast. Nothing special here other than I am using the upper hole for front links and lower hole for the rear links. This will obviously change per terrain.

4481

Next up I purchased some ultra light n pimp transmission parts. This will cut some weight and help with rotational mass. The actual real effects this will give me will probably be almost unnoticeable, but hey every bit helps. I also opted for the non-slipper gear, seen the slipper bone alot of people in comps so I'm not even gonna waste my time with it.

4480

And by the magic of the intermet....presto all done! I installed the Rcbros motor mount because the stock plastic one stinks and allows your motor to flex alot. Running a 225mg dig servo in the stock location. After nabil brings out his mount I may switch to it, until then the stocker works great.

4483

Just a pic showing the shocks mounted up and now its getting closer to a roller. Using the middle holes (b) on the shock arms and going with shock hole 1 up front and 3 in the rear for now.

4479

Ok so here she is, completed roller! Transmission installed along with driveshafts. I tapped out the setscrews for 3M hardware, the 4-40 crap failed me one to many times. Going to run some comp claws with this baby, running 3oz in the rear and 7oz up front with stock wheels. Running losi memory foams for now. My gc is roughly 2 3/8" and droops out to roughly 2 7/8". Gonna try this setup for now, but I'm sure I will make changes per terrain changes.

4478

Well thats about it for tonight, but in closing I decided to show off my handy work. Spent today making some knock off "boss claws". Losi is making these for production but lord knows when they will go on sale. Almost a year since they have been in existence. Used my old rovers and they came out to roughly a 1/8" taller than my comp claws, just where I want them to be. At first I was intimidated by this since I never glued many tires, but in reality it was very easy just time consuming.

So you copied Del Monte's shock setup too? I used 40 wt all around but it seems a little soft...may just add more preload to the springs. If you just rebuilt the shocks, give them time...then see if they leak.

Are those real C cups going to keep the springs on or did you adjust your steering to not hit them? I set mine up to just barely touch the springs...I figure that with the dig it will still turn well. I also geared the front motor a little faster for a sort of overdrive effect. I hate that the springs are always being pulled off the cups, but they always seem to get pushed back on during the run...was actually thinking of safety wiring them to adjust my steering back a little sharper.

For the record, I never had a problem with the stock motor mount flexing, but all that is a thing of the past for me...for now anyways.

Mike my setup is a cross between Jake and nabils. It's a good place to start since they do very well with there rigs. The real C's are awesome, they are grooved so the spring threads onto the cup so no way the spring is gonna pop off. My tires are set to just touch the spring but under articulation they rub. Would hate to see how much they hit with a tall tire. Motor mount was cheap so I just bought it for piece of mind.

I want to check the Cs out.

What are you doing for steering? I bought the CKRC BTA, but since I went MOA, it won't fit. I just used some spacers to get the rod a little higher...it's a little higher than the top of the worm gear section when looking directly at the front.

Running stock setup far as steering, only difference is the titanium steering links and I lowered the servo down. Thought about raising the link but we shall see how it shakes down. I dont believe u need anything fancy here. Ckrc one is nice but it puts the servo back to far in my opinion. Long as u drive good I don't believe anyone needs a fancy steering system, losi guys have proven that point. Hopefully the moa works for ya, it's known to destroy parts so be ready to replace stuff. Some aluminum parts may benefit here as well.
