Thread: Rckcrwlr's BWD Whiplash 13.5 FoFF

  1. #1

Default Rckcrwlr's BWD Whiplash 13.5 FoFF

    So the secret is out.

While in Vegas I got a bad case of the Whiplash from Billet Works Design. This thing was just sick. When I got back home, I dug though my parts and found out that I could part this bad boy together with minimal out of pocket cost...so the call went into Don.

With in a week or so, this showed up.

It's the 13.5" WB Whiplash and I also opted for the FoFF Motor Plate to ensure durability.

My list of parts goes like this:

    BWD Whiplash 13.5 WB
    Axial Axles
    Gunnar Toobs
    Felsenfest No Slop Lockers
    Axial HD Bevel/Pinion Gears
    CVD's
    Alum Chubs and knuckles
    STRC Alum rear adapter w/shafts
    Axial Tranny
    RRP Gears/one piece Locker
    Alum Case
    BWD FoFF Motor Plate
    BWD Motor Sav'r
    Losi 4" Crawler Shocks
MIP or Revo Drive Shafts...not sure yet
    RC4WD Twister 2.2 Wheels (40mm)
    RC4WD Intimidator FOFF Tires

    Traxxas VXL BL System

This is going to be a slow build...not because of the difficulty, in fact, Don has made it really easy with step by step instructions....I just have three rigs to build before Nov 6 TTC Comp.

Talking to Stick King today. He expressed that he was feeling neglected. We bought these rigs so we could run them together. He has built his...mine was still in the box.

He made me feel so bad that I went to work after dinner and got it moving in the right direction.

First off, BWD has an Online Instruction Manual that is the best Step-by-Step instructions I have ever used. Thanks Don.

Unpacked all the parts and separated the hardware by size and type to make it easier

First step is to mount the battery hold-downs on the skid plate

    Then bolt up the bulkheads

And the Shock Towers and supports. Mine is a 13.5" Wheelbase. There are two other wheelbases (12.5" & 14.5") available so these may look different.

Knowing the beating that this will be taking, I had to make sure that I eliminated as many "weak" points as possible.

Enter stage left: Aluminum Tranny Case with full RRP Gears and One Piece locker. Oh yeah, and one of BWD's FOFF Motor Plates. Notice the extra mounting point.

Here it is mounted in the chassis. Planning on adding a VXL system.

Added the upper chassis to box this thing in for an indestructible set-up.

    Installed the side rails

Supplying your own Revo Ends, I assembled the upper and lower links.

    Axles are next...

The next steps in making this rig bullet proof is to add Felsenfest No Slop Lockers.

Had to drill the 4mm access hole if it is necessary to pull the shafts out.

I then added the HD Bevel and Pinion gears from Axial to the Lockers. Make sure that you thread lock all the screws. You don't want one of them to back out when you are halfway across the lake. :lmao:

Adding to that, I picked up some Axial CVD's and a set of Gunner Beef Toobs.

Only weak point now is the plastic cases.

A couple things to touch on...

    Installing Beef Toobs:

You will need to grind out the bearing retainer in the two halves of the Axial Cases. I used a dremel with a small rasp to control the amount of material to get rid of. Make sure you dry fit everything for pumping the grease in. Trust me, it is less of a mess if you have to remove more material.

A little trick when using CVD's or XVD's that have a ring to retain the pin, add a little blue thread lock to it, AND LET IT DRY. This will put just enough hold on it so that it does not slide off and you lose a pin. Also make sure that you do it before you grease or wipe it down with motor spray.

If you haven't tried it yet, get a hold of Team3Six and try his Rock Lube.

This stuff sticks to your gears...

It was time to put the chassis down and work on the Axles.

I mounted the Servo/Upper Link Mount. It uses the existing two posts and the top of the 3 link mount. The bottom of the mounts are counter-bored to set over the posts and the top is counter sunk for flat head screws.

I added a 645 servo figuring that I don't need torque as much as speed for this. I am also thinking of using a Kimbrough Servo Saver so I can try to protect the servo on those high speed runs on not so smooth surfaces.

I had some 3.5" shocks that I am going to try first. If not, I have some Losi 4" shocks that I will have to limit. The links get mounted with the supplied hardware.

I also need to find driveshafts in the 120-125mm length. Looking at possibly using Revo Shafts.

    So here she sits:

And here she is with the powerplant:

So I followed Don's Instructions to a tee. Made sure I had everything that was needed.

Got it all put together, mounted the wheels and tires...but something just doesn't look right.

    Is my camber off?
Do I need to use the 4" shocks?
Maybe it will look better with a body on it?
